The former Captain of the West Coast Eagles, Ben Cousins is a dynamic midfielder who still leads from the front. Even when the rest of the team is down Cousins will often be out there running hard and getting the ball. Not quite in the category of the AFL elite such as Brisbane's Michael Voss, Cousins is still one of the premier midfielders in the competition, the only real criticism of his play would be a somewhat dodgy disposal.
At the end of the 2004 season it appeared that Cousins had relinquished his role as the Eagles premier midfielder to the up and coming talents of Chris Judd, but the resulting freedom that opposition clubs thus allowed him enabled the Eagles captain to shine at his absolute brightest in season 2005. Cousins took out the Brownlow Medal along with a number of other awards as he returned to the form he showed in the earlier years of the decade. Hard working, hard running and mostly good skills gained him the All-Australian vice captaincy in what was probably Cousins's best season yet in a stellar career.
Cousins was stripped of the Eagles captaincy after the infamous Booze Bus incident before the start of the 2006 season, however he continued to play well all season, and still provided on field leadership to his team mates, ending the season as one of the West Coast premiership players. Unfortunately though, Cousins again fell off the rails during the off season, and was suspended by the club indefinitely while he seeked treatment for a drug problem in the United States. Brought in from the cold in the latter part of the season, Cousins stood up to play some outstanding football; if he can stay out of trouble he should be better for a full run in 2008.
- Well so much for staying out of trouble - |
