2013 Draft

After last nights game against Carlton it certainly looks like we need an injection of speed in the defensive half.

Yep could not agree more, except just not guys with pace, but guys who can also kick.

A Selwood, S Butler, S Hurn just do not have natural pace. I think they may groom Adam Carter for the small defender spot. I would not mind for a change a role maybe Josh Hill to a half back flank as trying something different at least.

Very disappointed with Butlers inept disposal this year - did an ok job on Gartlett, but his kick in the last quarter on the half forward line was just pathetic.

Amazing to think after all the drafts we have had, we have not found a replacement for Wirra or Phil Matera in all these years.

If one of Newman or Dick can raise their fitness to the required level, would give us some X factor.

Indeed.
"Wasted" draft picks have really cost us with so many players struggling to make it. Really need Brennan & Smith to step up.
Wilson is starting to look handy, but its hard to judge pace when he is playing in the WAFL, and more on KPPs.

Jacob Brennan - selection #62 2010 National Draft.
Ashley Smith - selection #36 2008 National Draft
Blayne Wilson - selection #2 2011 PRE SEASON Draft.

Ashley Smith is the only one of those three I would be expecting things from (especially with the other players drafted around him).

Can't believe people are expecting so much from picks 50+. Most people from other clubs are probably thinking we have gotten good value from the Brennan selection (18 games in 2 and a bit years).

I'd like to see Smith get game after game. He's always going to be better that Brennan. Only 32 games to date...gonna take 1.5 - 2 seasons to get him up into the Zone.

A few scouts checking out Stephen Michaels nephew today. Ashley Wallam plays colts at EP. Looks handy but today's game was nothing to write home about.

Two different sentences.
Drafted players that have not worked out, have left us with a "hole" in our devlopment.
Brennan, Smith, & Wilson all look promising and on the cusp of becoming good regular players, that's why the club needs them to take the next step. Sheppard was actually atarting to look ok before his injury.

WCE and Dockers don't usually talk trades but if they keep playing him in the WAFL I would hope WCE ask about Croziers availability.

Matt Crouch
North Ballarat Rebels, 181cm, 77kg, 21/4/95
A broken finger sustained earlier this month will delay Crouch's start to the championships. But it shouldn't change his ranking as one of the better inside midfielders of the draft. Crouch digs into contests, rips the ball out and feeds it off, and has improved his outside play.

But his form has prompted one league scout to describe Garlett as the best player in the country outside the AFL.

Last weekend the 19-year-old had 27 possessions, 11 marks and two goals playing on a wing. The game before he had 29 touches and kicked two goals.

"If you were ranking players just on talent right now, he'd go No. 1," the recruiter told the Herald Sun yesterday.

"On talent, he's a better player than (last year's No.1) Lachie Whitfield."

WAFL players and coaches are mesmerised by Garlett's poise and skill. But his off-field issues continue to give recruiters headaches, as they weigh up whether Garlett could adapt to the rigour and discipline of the AFL.

Still think we should have taken the punt.

Patrick Cripps could be worth a shot (Jamie's 3rd cousin apparently.) He's a 190cm midfielder who has been compared (physically) to Jobe Watson (he grew 20cm in the last 2 years.)

Liked the looks of Callum Collard for Perth today. Looks to be a natural crumbing forward and knows where the big sticks are. Be worth looking at.

Remains the elephant in the room. Played against Adam Carter and kicked 5 goals. Be interesting to see if someone will take a punt on him in the first round or whether he'll drop down to the second or third round.

Swans have made him move to Cunderdin during the week because they couldn't keep him in control and away from friends while he was living in Perth. Also gave them an excuse when they were asked by AFL clubs why he was late or missing training sessions.

Can't train at WCE or the Dockers and live 2 hours away in Cunderdin. Despite glowing reports from a club who are trying to get (and desperately need) the $50K payday he has shown little effort being ready to commit.
