Let me set the scene here. Grand Final, playing Collingwood, we’re down by five goals. I think you [Greg Williams]s know what happened.

About 5 years too late!

If you read my original post, it was about getting value, when he still had value.

The Boat wrote:Huge loss if he leaves. I understand where he is coming from though.

Would have been in the best players in the SF then gets shafted when Masto comes straight back in and stinks it up for the remaining games.

I would hold onto him and let him go head to head with Masten over summer. The winner gets a spot on the field, the loser plays with East Perth.

Can we afford that though. List management is about meeting salary cap as much as anything. Rosa would be on good money and on that money he needs to be starting 22 and not playing at EP. Him leaving frees up cap space that can be spent elsewhere. Rosa leaving this year, like the Sinclair trade, is a no brainer. Also creates good karma amongst the players as they see players leaving for better opportunities.

And now the club are insisting that they won't trade him.

Hard to see how he will leave if the club simply refuses to look at any deals offered.

So Gold Coast are interested...

Gee, if only they'd had a player we wanted and we could have done a deal.

Why is Vozzo being such a dick?
Selwood refused to re-sign and left as a free-agent ensuring we would get raped on compensation, yet "he's been a wonderful servant of the club and we wish him well."
Rosa wants a trade, that would be a WIN-WIN-WIN (cos lets face it, he's not going to get many games.) He's doing the right thing by us asking for a trade, ensuring we can at least get something, and now suddenly Vozzo wants to play it tough?
WHY? Because Rosa a has a contract and Vozzo is a Real-Estate Lawyer.

He re-signed last year because our midfield looked shaky and everyone assumed he would play on for a few more years. Now, realistically, he's been passed by Duggan and Sheed, we've brought in Redden and Jetta, and others are nipping at his heals. Situations change.

Sinca was contracted, and originally wanted to stay, but the deal was a good one all-round.

So we have a choice. We can trade him now, (even GC's 3rd round pick is worth having, and/or package it up and try to move up).
Or he can stay, play most of the season for East Perth, then leave as a Free-Agent, and at that point we will get nothing.

Obviously it depends on what GC are offering, but why not make THAT the sticking point?
I'd ASK for pick #35, OR Pick #19 for Rosa and #36.
Probably settle for #43.

Rosa is a solid worker. Consider that AFL is an industry and players are employees. Rosa turns up, does a good job, does his role. Sure, the club has other players that can do that role now, but Rosa played 17 games in 2015. If he played 20 it wouldn't be a shock. Reliable best 25 player, mature, experienced and hard working. No point getting rid of him for anything less than at least a teen to twenty pick. Otherwise he is a good worker for the club. We need 30-35 players to see out the season. 22 players won't play 24 games each in 2016.

The point is that we have a choice to trade him now, whilst he's under contract and we can trade, or lose him as a free-agent next year, at which point we will get absolutely nothing for him.

Rosa is 29. He's probably got another 2 years, maybe 3 tops at the right club.
He can stay another year here, playing as depth (nowhere near best 25) and if he's lucky get maybe a dozen AFL games. Then hope he can still get a 1~2 year deal somewhere as a FA.
Or he can go to the GC, and probably play every game he's fit, for a couple of years, maybe a bit more.

See this is what I don't get. Selwood (who when fit was easily best 22) strung us along then walked out as a Free-Agent, ensuring we would get screwed, and everyone is like "oh what a top bloke, great servant, understandable he wants to play with his brother, best of luck."
Rosa, who is on the fringe anyway, is asking for a trade ensuring we get fair compensation, and everyone's like "oh, he's contracted, what a [Daniel Chick]!"

Meanwhile, Gold Coast has emerged as a strong contender to snare disgruntled Eagles veteran Matt Rosa.

Having started as the substitute in the Grand Final, Rosa surprised West Coast officials this week by declaring his intention to switch clubs, with the Suns firmly in the hunt for the 28-year-old.

“They have expressed interest – I’m not sure how strong it is, because we’ve only had very preliminary discussions with (Gold Coast list manager) Scott Clayton,” Vozzo said.

“We have to respect what (Rosa) has requested, but he has to respect as well that he’s a contracted player and we prepared and planned our list around him being on it.”

Nah, he just wants to play on. I think even calling him "disgruntled" is a bit much. He wants to play AFL for as long as he can.
He would have one more year here, as depth, maybe 10~12 games if we get a lot of injuries. Whereas he can go somewhere that really needs him, and probably get another 30~40 games over the next 2~3 years.

GC have expressed interest, and naturally a team like GC, Brissy, or Carlton is going to be a better fit. You can see where a player of his maturity would appeal to Gold Coast.

With both rosa and selwood you can't begrudge them chasing the bucks at this point in their career.

The situation is very similar to what the QStick's was when he left- they are at a point where they are going to have progressively less opportunities at this club and probably only have 2-3 years of top level football in them. It makes perfect sense for them to chase a good contract elsewhere to extend their career and try and put a few hundred k more in the bank before they retire. Rosa has given the club a decade of good service, and is a cusp 22 player now and likely to be even more on the fringes by this time next year- he would be stupid to stay put, so all you can do is wish him well.
