Random Stats - Interesting facts

Postby Crazy Dazz on Fri Nov 02, 2018 5:47 pm

Been looking at some of the random stats available on the net.
This one I found interesting was the average number of games played for each draft pick.
I graphed it, including rookie and PSD, but can't seem to get the image to display.

Put simply there is a marked drop off from pick one,
Pick 6 seems to be cursed,
what's really interesting is just how flat the trend line is past the 2nd round, with minimal drop in the 3rd round,
and almost completely flat thereafter including the PSD and RD.

Now in one sense, it simply echos what we already know, that after the 2nd round, it's pot luck.
This leads me to a few thoughts:
1) That as a league you'd think we'd be better at identifying talent in these latter picks, whereas what it shows is that on the whole we might as well just put the names in a hat after the 2nd round.
2) Late 2nd round picks should be traded willingly, 3rd and 4th should be traded enthusiastically.
3) When people say some spud is worth more than using pick 50 in the rookie draft, they're probably wrong. In so far as #50 in the RD will probably get you same result as #50 in the ND.

What years does it span in the draft?

Also later on in the draft, those random spikes are quite easily caused by one guy playing an abnormal amount of games and bumping those results above the picks around, like pick 57 having 250 games from Andrew Embley.

Also looks like the PSD picks get boosted due to the old system where it as much more used and a lot looser with the rules (dermy, roos, goodwin, woewodin amongst some of those picked up with PSD picks)

It does for the most part demonstrate that the earlier you pick the better the success rate, but also shows you that it is no guarantee either.
