Are Eagles in Box Seat for Tall Diamonds?

Postby Crazy Dazz on Sat Nov 17, 2018 2:01 pm

It's stating the obvious that question marks remain over our ruck stocks.

But another emerging gap is tall defenders. Oscar is really the only one, and he's shaping up more as a swingman.
Good Tall Defenders are becoming harder to find, because the days of simply playing a lock-down role on one player are largely gone. Plus, IMHO, a flexible guy like Schofield is also valuable.

And unfortunately there is an absolute dearth of quality defenders, especially Tall Defenders in this draft.
Which means we could be forced to gamble #22 on somebody like Koschitzke (and hope his Hip is sorted) or look for diamonds in the rough, with either rubbish picks or the Rookie Draft.

Fortunately, the AFL forsaw our need, and appointed none other than WC Development Coach, Simmo Mate, and soon to be Beagle, Drew Petrie, to run a special camp for Tall Roughies.

No idea what the results were, but these are the players who attended:
Angus Rana (North Adelaide, 198.5cm)
Bailey Griffiths (Oakleigh Chargers, 200cm)
Bailey Schmidt (Dandenong Stingrays, 198.8cm)
Ben Kelly (Murray Bushrangers, 201.8cm)
Jacob Koschitzke (Murray Bushrangers, 195cm)
Jake Steele (Glenorchy, 194.7cm)
Joe Furphy (Northern Knights, 202cm)
Joe Griffiths (Sandringham Dragons, 202.4cm)
Josh Hart (West Adelaide, 205cm)
Kian Dennis (Lions Academy, 195cm)
Mark Marriot (Murray Bushrangers, 201.5cm)
Matt Conroy (Gold Coast Academy, 199.7cm)
Matthew Cumming (Dandenong Stingrays, 198.3cm) <
Ryan Henkel (Gippsland Power, 200cm)
Sam Conway (Geelong Falcons, 201.5cm)
Stephen Cumming (Dandenong Stingrays, 199.2cm) < I assume these are Twins?
Brynn Teakle (East Fremantle, 202cm)
Tim Auckland (Launceston, 197.5cm)
Tom Hallebone (Northern Knights, 201.1cm)
Tom Jones (Glenelg, 202cm)
Tyler Watts (Greater Western Sydney Rebels, 197.9cm)

Obviously results would have gone to all clubs, but hopefully Petrie has the inside gos.

The commentators could also have so much fun commentating Tom Jones.
What a night Tom Jones is having. He's really enjoyed being back at Optus on The Green Green Grass of Home.
While It's Not Unusual for someone to step up in a milestone game, that was dynamite. You could rename him Atomic Tom.
And it's a cold night at Optus tonight. What's New Pussycat?, Tom Jones in long sleeves is what.
The Eagles have picked up a gem here. There's Somethin' About You Baby I Like

We do have Josh Rotham developing, Brander can play at either end and we are apparently sniffing around Paparone. Having said that, another would be very useful.

A couple more to add to the list. Added O'Reilly because it wouldn't be the 1st time we've taken a forward and turned him into a back.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Late/rookie
James BLANCK 195cm/80kg
Key Position Defender | Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro
+ Closing speed, spoiling, rebounding, intercept marking
- Endurance, strength, raw

James Blanck is one of the surprise packets of the 2018 season, coming from a long way back to make Vic Metro and then play a couple of games and show his wares on the Big stage. He uses the ball well, can close down an opponent with his acceleration, and does the defensive things right.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Late/rookie
Riley GRUNDY 195cm/79kg
Key Position Defender | Sturt/South Australia
+ Contested marking, athleticism, speed, scope, rapid improvement
- Game sense, accumulation, skills under pressure

Riley Grundy personifies raw talent in the draft pool. He has tremendous athleticism and huge upside as shown by his quick development in the past 18 months. His hands are strong and naturally a defender in the way he plays which at his size and speed make him a valuable commodity.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Late/rookie
Dillon O’REILLY 194cm/89kg
Key Position Forward | East Fremantle/West Australia
+ Marking, goalkicking, versatility, work rate, size, clutch
- Endurance, physicality, speed

While many err on the side of caution with tall forwards, West Australian talent, Dillon O’Reilly has shown clear signs that he is not afraid of the big moment, has a large upside and a great deal of versatility to his game.He is not the best athlete in terms of speed and endurance, but has a high work rate and mobility.

They look ok. With late picks, we could grab a couple.
