Talented midfielder Poch Amores has been reward for his superb Landmark Country Football Championships by winning the Ken Baxter Medal as the fairest and best player in the colts division.
Amores became the third Great Southern Storm player in history to win the medal, etching his name alongside Corey Linthorne (2017) and Logan Stubber (2015), after being judged by the umpires as the best player across three days of colts competition.
The 17-year-old Royals product was an ultra-consistent contributor through midfield and out on the wing as Storm won their first four games of the carnival before falling to South West in the grand final.

One moment of his brilliance came in the second quarter, when he took a fantastic pack mark and then nailed the goal to bring the Swans within a goal of the Sharks. Preston used to hang out at his local park kicking the ball around with his mates and playing Auskick before following then to his local club at Mount Hawthorn. From there the football journey has taken Preston into school footy as Wesley College in Perth and a place in the East Perth (WAFL) Development Program. Now he is in Townsville representing his state at the All Nations Cup.
Like many other boys at this carnival, Preston knew early on in his playing days that he was bigger, faster and stronger than many of his mates and fellow players. Now he wants to put that to its maximum use and follow the pathway to one day play AFL football for the West Coast Eagles.

The West Coast Eagles’ Next-Generation Academy member was lively in the forward line for the Swans. In the first quarter, he was able to nudge his opponent under the ball, gathered it, burst away from his opponent and then laced out Ayden Cartwright inside 50. In the last quarter, he took a courageous mark when he went back with the flight of the ball despite on-coming traffic. He finished with 15 possessions and four marks.

Apart from his apparent affliction with Notte Syndrome, he seems lively.The West Coast Eagles’ Next-Generation Academy member was lively for the Royals, rotating between the forward line and the ruck. He finished with 13 possessions, 16 hit-outs, eight marks, five tackles, three inside 50s and a goal. The highlight of his game came late in the second quarter, when he took a strong pack mark just before the siren went. He then went back and coolly slotted the goal from a tight angle after the siren to give the Royals a 25-point lead at the main break

In 18 games, he averaged 15 possessions, four tackles and three marks and was often the Royals’ link-up player due to his exhilarating speed and damaging skills. At East Perth he ranked third for total possessions (272), second for marks (53) and first for tackles (68). His best games came against Claremont in round 12 (22 possessions, five marks and four tackles), South Fremantle in round 13 (29 possessions, seven marks, seven tackles and six inside 50s) and Perth in round 17 (21 possessions, five tackles, four inside 50s and a goal).
