Our best bet to get a better pick than 91 (our 2nd) which should turn into about 75, is to trade next years pick 53 for Brisbanes 52 this year.

Brisbane traded that pick to Port.
The Power have moved picks 29, 71 and a future-first round selection to the Lions and received picks 16, 52, 55 and 72.

Best bet is to now trade the same pick with Port or our 2020 pick 50 for Port 2019 picks 52 and 55 this year as the only way of us getting a better deal. That would give Port the opportunity to combine 2020 picks 42, 46 and our 53 for a decent pick in the 30s next year. The other 2 options are to trade 2020 pick 53 for Hawthorns 2019 pick 54 or 2020 pick 50 for North Melbournes 2019 pick 50. Still not sure how many players we'll take in the draft now they've delisted AhChee and Brayshaw.

I think Adelaide have done well in the trade with GWS for pick 4. I think GWS will bomb next year. They're going to drink it like they lost that grand final.

As mentioned earlier, GWS shot themselves in the foot with their trade for pick 6.
Sydney were 99% guaranteed to big on Green at #5, (if for no other reason than to screw with GWS) meaning GWS would have to sacrifice #6 and then get some rubbish pick as change.

Frankly, trades like this should be banned.
The purpose of the bidding & points system to ensure that teams pay "fair value" (less discount) for players from their mythical academies.
As a result of this trade, GWS will get Green for mostly debt, then come first round next year (when they are supposed to repay the debt) oops, they don't have a pick.

It's a feckin brilliant trade for Adelaide. Even if GWS win the flag next year, Adelaide get an extra 1st round pick for the cost of moving backwards 2 spots. (And as you say, GWS will tumble, so the pick is more likely to be in the low teens.)

It might hurt if they had their heart set on a particular player, buts its a calculated gamble. The top 3 are pretty much locked in. After that it's a toss-up between Flanders, Serong, & Ash. The deal probably includes the promise not to take their preferred player, which means they only have to worry about Sydney, and either of those three would be good. Plus they might be after a bigger or taller player, and for someone else entirely.

I guess that as Streaker alluded to earlier, Brisbane had surplus picks, so consolidating them (and deferring one to next year) makes sense.

Similar to GWS, Mead was almost certain to be bid on before their pick 29, so they hope to have leap-frogged that to 16. He was probably gonna get a bid in the mid 20's so they should be safe with picks 16 & 18.

The problem Port now have is that the AFL changed the rules so you can nolonger use a huge bag of shit to pay for your points. Clubs can only take in picks they have places for, and the other picks are forfeit even if subsequently needed.
Last I checked, Port have a maximum of 7 places available (and that's based on a list of 40, and Buzza and their rookies not being added till the end.) But they currently have 10 picks (9 worth points.)

Even if we can't get them to part with 52 or 55, it would asking about a deal for a couple of their 4th round picks, given they have 66, 67, 68, & 72. That 3rd rounder next year will end up being worth somewhere from 250~300 points. So swapping that for either #55, or a bunch of those 4th rounders, would be a fair deal.

As to why they bothered swapping 71 & 72, yeah, who knows. It's no skin for Port as they are likely to lose it anyway, but why Brissy bothered I don't know.

Can't believe all the awful deals gold is making. We should be making deals with them. Like the Yeo deal and the one that got us Ryan and Allen and Petch. Oh well. There's no room in the cap anyway

Makes sense for them to trade away that concession pick from next year.
That way, when they have another shit season, and ruin a few more kids, they can just stick their hand out and ask for more help.

I can only assume we gave up that 3rd rounder from Next year? doesn't seem like a very good deal, since it was so close to end the end of the draft anyway.
