Patrick Cripps - How much would it take?

Postby Crazy Dazz on Sat Aug 29, 2020 11:31 pm

A couple of seasons back he signed what was then a massive extension, to take him through till the end of next season.
Which of course is precisely when he becomes a (obviously restricted) Free Agent.

Now the latest news is that whilst Carlton are obviously keen, he has put contract talks on hold.
Apparently during the stand-down, he spent his time at home in WA, and there's a rumour the two things are connected.

At the time of his contract extension, he was also made "co-captain". That's the kind of rub'n'tug you give a young kid to turn his head, but you have to figure he's gotten more sanguine with maturity.

He was once asked about playing for the Eagles, and very nobly said that building something and winning a flag with Carlton, would mean more, and that winning one with the Eagles would feel like he hadn't earnt it.
But how long do you keep drinking the kool-aid?

When he signed that extremely lucrative contract extension, no doubt he had a bit of a laugh at Dom Sheed, famously taken 2 picks ahead of him in 2013. And no doubt a few months later he had a very different feeling.

He's literally never played finals, and he's not going to this season either. He's actually won two spoons. At some point he's got to realise that Carlton is an underachieving Turd.

If he doesn't extend this season, no-doubt there will be a lot of talk about him as a "Pre-Agent". No good to us as we could never afford the trade.
But with a bit of luck, Carlton will suck again next season, meaning they get a decent compo-pick for him.
But the question remains whether we could offer enough to entice him home?

There's no point talking about real dollars, as we never know precisely what somebody gets, how much less they might be prepared to accept, or how much space a team has in their cap. But one thing's certain, he would be expensive, and we would have a challenging time freeing up enough space. You'd have to figure that IF it happens, he would be the most sought after Free-Agent since Buddy.

NB: I don't really see a scenario in which he "comes home" to us at that time. We couldn't afford a trade, and getting him as a restricted FA means making an offer Carlton won't match.
But if it gets to that point he's certainly going to be talked about , a lot, and it's nice to dream. :D

I love teasing Carlton supporters with thisone. But we could never afford him. Kelly was cheap for us in salary cap but cost in picks. He would have to take a massive pay cut. Carlton could have all the picks because we wouldn't be able to afford anyone else anyway

Yep, either that, or we trade out players to make room. I love Cripps as a player, but he can't play close to goal as he butchers the ball. He's like a slightly bigger Fyfe, gets lots of the ball, but struggles to finish off his work.

Don't want him and don't rate him as high as some.

For mine, the prototype player for Cripps' role (big body mid) is now Yeo with the likes of Steele (st K) and Petracca (melb) getting there too. You need to run both ways, use the ball well and tackle hard, all with some pace out of stoppages.

Pace out of stoppages is the most valuable, and Cripps isn't exactly lightning fast.

Otherwise you need to go forward and damage (Dusty, Danger for example) - haven't seen a lot of this, but he's certainly no Dusty

The Cripps / fyfe / Oliver types who all like to be hit-to out of stoppages and try to do everything single handedly, at the expense of their ball use, are in trouble. Most teams have worked out how to maniupulate these players to their advantage (ala Priddis, T.Mitchell, the Crouch brothersetc ).

As a Free-Agent, if we could somehow afford him, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Simple fact is that if we keep on playing nice, we're going to get left behind.
We're already well into a dangerous period. Our last 2 1at round picks were Brander and Venables, who haven;t really worked out. And before that it was Duggan.
Unless we start sucking balls and getting good draft picks, then we need new strategies to get the game-changers into our team.
Kelly literally fell in our lap, and we still did our best to fuck that up.

We've actually generally done well with our drafting and built a good solid squad, its certainly not doom & gloom. But to stay at the top, we have to come up with other ways to get that top echelon of talent.

It doesn't have to be Cripps, and probably won't be, but he's the kind of thing we should be having a red-hot crack at.

He would need to take his game to another level to worth considering. I'm not a huge fan. We all love the hard inside stuff he does, but he's a poor user of the ball. Besides in order to pay him we would need to let go one of our top ranking, highly paid players (and I don't mean a young up-and-comer). It would have to be a Gaff, Yeo or Shuey.

Freo's salary cap is reportedly tight as a fish's asshole too. Besides they don't need another Fyfe type that does the grunt work, but butchers the ball.

At the risk of sounding like an arsehole vulture, does anyone Know where his GF Monique is from? I know they're "back" in Perth now, but where is her family?
Surely she needs to have her family and friends around, especially when he's on the road, so that should probably dictate where he plays out his career.
