Not much of interest for us, but plenty of interest from a WA perspective, with Logan McDonald a strong contender for number one pick.

There's also a lot of interest around Grainger-Barras. He'll be interesting to watch as I personally don't think he's worth the early pick touted. He's a big talented kid, no doubt, but IMHO he's years off being AFL ready, and is yet to find a cure for his Notte's disease.

An interesting one, who seems to have mostly flown under the radar, is Colin Young's son Logan. He actually does appear to be a genuine big mid, but remains to be seen if that can translate at AFL level.
I wonder if the Muppets have their eye on him?

We have the 1st pick in the 4th round, currently #62. History says this will come in around the mid 50's, but with so many academy platers, and teams expected to use 4 or 5 picks to pay for players, our pick could rocket into the late 40s.

The AFL has just announced a rule-change for this year, allowing clubs to use otherwise-dead picks as points. (Previously clubs could only bring in as many picks as they had places for)
This has improved the "value" of our pick as points, and increased our chances of trading it away.
Whilst clubs without enough points can simply go into debt, they're reluctant to do that for a 1st round selection, as it then pushes back their first round selection next year.
Given our apparent disdain for this draft, I would not be surprised to see us trade it away to improve our picks next year.

if we do stay in this draft assume there's a particular player or players we have our eyes on.

I’m not sure what we should target at that point. Think you almost have to take a gamble and go for somebody with X-factor. No point playing it safe and getting another “almost good enough” type.

One benefit of FS and NGA players being taken in the draft is, if they're not attached to our club, other clubs will be trading for more draft value points which provides us with an opportunity to trade for a better pick.

That is an issue, but the club needs to find a way through that and develop alternate methods of monitoring potential draftees. Whether that means being more proactive in the east with more boots on the ground then so be it. If CV affects the 2021 season (which it will to some extent) to the point of reducing our exposure to interstate draft prospects, we are going to be behind the eight ball next year as well.

If that is the reason, then that is disappointing.
On the whole, we should have been in a "better" position regarding covid. We'd already traded our first round pick, we should have been well-placed to pick WA Boys, and SHOULD have been no worse off regarding the others.
Sending the clear signal that we were desperate to trade out of this draft, probably means we got less value in the trades.

It's not as though many of these kids would be new on the scene. Most should have been on the collective radar for the past couple of years. If we don't have adequate insight, then yes, we need to look at rebuilding our networks.

I thought is was only the lazy basket case Melbourne clubs that relied on U18s to do their selection for them.

What concerns me the most about this, is the probably that this has driven our list management decisions, rather than the other way round.
Obviously our bulked up 2021 draft will coincide with a raft of retirements, but is that cause or effect? Have we held onto players a year too long because we feared this draft?

Ugle is a smooth-moving outside type who loves to run. He impressed enough in Swan Districts’ Colts side to earn selection in the Under 18 All-Stars games, where he provided plenty of x-factor. He comes from good footballing pedigree and is said to be a terrific character.

l thought those changes only started next year (pick 21) with pick 41 for 2022?

Not all heroes wear capes, some of them are only kids who don’t even wear shirts. As was the case last month when Girrawheen Senior High School students Jamison Ugle, 17, and Edward Booma Lyndon, 16, came to the rescue of the 20-year-old man who was allegedly viciously attacked by a group of Churchlands High School students at the Stirling train station. Five boys, aged between 14 and 16, appeared in court this week all facing charges in relation to the sickening broad daylight attack which saw Matthew Henson robbed of his shoes and placed into an induced coma. A sixth was charged with aggravated robbery on Friday. Mr Henson is now in a stable condition and recovering in hospital.

His survival is partly thanks to the quick-thinking good samaritans in Jamison and Edward who ran to the victim’s side and began First Aid — a skill the two Clontarf Academy leaders learnt last year. Jamison, an aspiring AFL star who plays for Swan Districts, took off his shirt and fashioned it into a pillow while Edward ran to seek help after Mr Henson was placed into the recovery position. Speaking to The West Australian, the modest heroes said they were just happy to hear Mr Henson is now on the mend. “The guy was laying there and me and Edward ran down to see if he was ok. Edward ran to get some help. We helped put him on his side as he had started having seizures. I took my work shirt off as a pillow to protect his head. He had a big cut on the side of his head too,” Jamison said. “I told the guy, who I thought was a transit guard, that there was someone unconscious and he didn’t believe me. It was scary, he [Henson] was shaking and having fits,” Edward said.Jamison credited his calm response to his football. “Footy helped, it’s helped me develop composure,” Jamison said. The year 12 students were at the train station that fateful day as they were making their way back to school from work placement at a plumbing business in the southern suburbs. While Jamison is keen to pursue an AFL career, both boys are hoping to qualify as plumbers when they graduate later this year from Clontarf, an organisation they have been involved with since they were in year 7.

Breaking the mould of bored teenagers, these best friends keep busy after school and on weekends regularly volunteering at local soup kitchens, participating in cultural dance groups and helping other young Noongar kids learn about their culture. Public Transport Authority spokesman David Hynes praised the quick-thinking boys. “We’re aware there was a lot of social media gossip about the incident which carried a lot of misinformation,” he said. “The facts of the matter, as is evident from the CCTV footage, are two people who were on the platform came to the victim’s aid almost immediately. “Another pair, which we believe may be the boys, were also in the vicinity. “One of them ran up the station stairs – we presume to alert staff – while the other bundled up an item of clothing to put under the victim’s head.
