At least we’ll be fresh for the pies next week having only played half a game of footy.

Two stupid lazy turnover goals started this. McGovern in particular taking risks we didn’t need to take.

The mental damage from this loss will affect our season

Man I wish I could be a fly on the wall in the rooms after this one. Seeing some of the sprays Simmo gave last year in that Doco this would be epic!

For the last part of the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th quarter the Saints looked a lot quicker and their tackling pressure was outstanding.
The eagles looked like they had hit a brick wall in the 3rd and lost all run in their legs. Sheed and many others could hardly get a trot up in the last quarter. Kicks missed their mark, handballs went high wide and handsome, nobody could pick the footy up and we were on the back foot.
The centre bounce dominance of Nic was nullified by the Saints mids hanging onto their eagles counterparts for most of the game, and getting away with it.
I lost count though of how many times Nic hit the ball down to Zac Jones.
Pretty hard to understand why Waterman was preferred over O'Neill....who I thought did well in his last AFL and WAFL games? O'Neill is a midfielder and we were spanked in the midfield for most of this game. Please bring O'Neill in next week.
Our midfield stocks are a real issue IMHO. We were unable to break tackles in the centre melees and around the stoppages while the Saints frequently got their hands free or broke clear. We are desperately missing Shuey and Yeo, and without them the cupboard looks pretty bare. We need more depth in the midfield, another bullocking 190cm mid around the ruck contests.
That said Winder looks sharp.
Brander did ok, as did Petch, but no one stood out after mid way through the 3rd quarter.
Disappointing that in these last two interstate games we have had a chance to win with plays in the last quarter. Cripps missing a dead easy shot against the Dogs, and now Darling dropping a sitter in the goal square.

We needed to go with a mid to replace Shuey, not a half-forward.

O'Neill didn't play WAFL today, and he didn't travel with the team, did he get a last-minute injury?

Witherden will come in for Hurn next week, he was good in the WAFL. If not O'Neill then bring in Trew next week. He has that explosiveness about him and can kick a goal.

Really disappointing just when looked like we were getting 2018 mojo back. The referee was poor at best, Kennedy mark grab of the arm, play on was a highlight.
Look for other teams to adopt the tactic to block, hold and strap a saddle on mids on the fly at centre bounces. I recall there is a rule about that, better check with Gill cant give an unfair advantage to one side.
Reserve got a thumping, no hope there. Looking forward to Willie return

Still probably our best player beside McGovern. That says something of our midfield. :(

Run out of run lost in a couple of areas. Firstly selection, Boots out Eagles would normally bring in a midfielder like O'Neil who had a fantastic WAFL game. Instead they bring in Waterman a high half foward who has played one WAFL game which wasn't even good. Hurn going down didn't help because with his experience he wouldn't have just kicked it up the line he would have switched. Positives are Brander, Petch, Jones and the ever reliable Oscar

Yep. There was a lot of smoke being blown up his arse all week. It was part of the st kilda story. All their good players from last year regained form. Butler and Hill had been stinking it up all this year.

I don't think I have ever seen Tim Kelly make so many ball handing errors, wow.

The worst part of losses like this is that every team now knows two things -:

1 - You are never out of it against the Eagles. Just hang in there and you will have a chance to over run them.

2 - Apply some real heat and the Eagles simply melt.

That was one of the more frustarting losses to sit through. And a complete lack of respect for a fearless bloke playing his 200th.
Oh noooo....the front door's exploded!!!

This is a great review. McGovern's face when Barass under kicked it and he was taken holding the ball. McGovern's kicking out wasn't great. Can we get Jetta back in the midyear draft? Brander is building some confidence and with 4 quarters like his first, he'd be a star.

Yeah we really miss Jetta's ability to spot & hit a target towards the middle of the ground. Gov has the vision to do it but not the skills. Hurn has the skills but not the dare. Everyone else in our backline has lollipop kicks that become ineffective if an opponent has the will to shut down our chip-it-around game.
Nek minit, we're spending an entire quarter in our back half with no way out because we have no run & carry option.
We need another Liam Ryan for the backline, and preferably another to play outside mid (both of whom would likely have been useless yesterday anyway, since Liam Ryan was off with the fairies all game)

Hurn being out obviously didn't help, but the same thing has happened to us too many times in the past 2 seasons for us not to have a Plan B by this point.
For a team that relies so heavily on kicking, we're running low on good kicks of the football.

Good summary, Hamburger.

Ah, now I know why O’Neill missed the WAFL game. He was on a last-minute flight to Melbourne because Sheed was sick.
