Call me precious, but I just can't fathom the idea of cycling the 25km home from work at 11pm ... in the rain I wouldn't say not checking the oil is a habit, mostly because a habit tends to be something you do repeatedly, not not do repeatedly. Either way, I should probably check it more. Aaand the main reason I was after the sports model in the Swift is because it's the only one that comes in yellow The inside does look nicer than the standard model too, but mostly the yellow. I just want something that isn't a cheap piece of plastic that'll last me at least until I'm unlucky enough to get knocked up and need more space. Not something too fancy, just something with a few 'luxury' features my current car doesn't have. Like air bags, speakers that work, air con (or I'll settle for a fan that doesn't blow out hot air), and an engine that runs. Anyone have an opinion on either the Swift or the Nissan Micra? Or the Suzuki Alto (though I'm thinking that may be *too* small).
Its really hard to find a Swift in your price range of <$10,000 - Alto yes but they are bloody small. I've got a few other alternatives here that are good value for money imo. Some of which are pretty luxurious for the coin. Ahhh shite, typed out a reply but forgot to post it before I closed the browser! In essence: I like the look of the Peugeot, since it is something a bit different. Trying to steer clear of the Getz-type cars, got a friend with one and just majorly unimpressive. Also would prefer a manual, just like driving them better. Really interested in this one: http://perth.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-Vehi ... Z297119832Low kms and only two years old. Am thinking maybe I need to drop the whole colour obsession, since it doesn't make sense to spend more than $5k extra on it. It's also just occurred to me I should probably find out if I can get a loan first

I know someone with one of those Peugeots and lets just say I never used to be a fan until I saw that car. Its a very nice piece of kit for the cash. A sporty drive, the interior is way above most things in its class imo.

I think the fitout in general in European cars is superior to non-European ones. My VW Polo is absolutely brilliant inside - though mine's the current model - any Polos in wceagles10's price range will be several years old when they were still shitty.

. That's a Beetle, not a Polo... This is my car: But it's a bit more than the $10,000 range we're talking about. You'd probably get about a 2005 Polo, which is the previous model, nowhere near the quality of this one (mind you, the 2010 Polo won pretty much every award it was up for, so that's probably not that surprising).

Nice car Q, but a gold stripe would have set it off. VW make extremely good cars these days and they look good as well.

Next question: should I get a vehicle inspection done before I buy whatever I end up buying? Cost is $188 through the RAC, and if I decide against the car, that's pretty much money gone. I guess on the other hand, if there turns out to be a major problem with it, it's better to know beforehand. However I figure since it'll still be under warranty, it should be getting serviced regularly and any faults will have been picked up, right?

For those that aren't mechanically minded and don't have a mechanic friend that can help them out, it's probably a good idea. Went with a mate (he's good at the bartering side of things)to help out another mate's missus chose a car. I detected a noise when braking and when I had decided it would be a good buy, we had them document the problem to be fixed before pickup of car, which it was and after 2 years the car has been faultless, (thank God) and she loves it to bits, which is good too.

Yep. 100% agree with Ric, it'll save you a lot of misery in the long run and if there is something minor as Ric said use it as a bargaining tool. Chances are it would have cost a lot more than $200 to be fixed anyway. If there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car then you'd be getting a bargain. Its a win, win, win situation. I've been in sales for more than 16 years, never be afraid to barter. Like Ric's friend I'm the "negotiator" of our group and a better price can always be had.....To a point. There is a fine balance between bartering and coming off as rude and arrogant. If you're not comfortable yourself with it get a family member or friend who is to come along with you when the time comes. Some sellers will allow the car to be taken to your own private mechanic..... My one charges $100 for a full inspection, this may be a cheaper option for you. Q - I love the new VW range. Great build and brilliant value for money and good looking too. I think the Sirocco is a sexy looking piece of machinery.

I think VW are making the most of what they can get out of the Audi marque without cannibalising it. The Polo for instance has the same base (though quite a different eventual body) as the upcoming Audi A1.
