WA country Football salary cap

Postby west coast ego on Tue Nov 22, 2016 9:32 pm

Not sure if this is the right forum?

Anyway, WACountry Football League applied a $3000 per match maximum salary cap today applicable from 2017.

While I get why they went down this path for some of the leagues like the South West that were/are paying big $$$$ and attracting genuine WAFL talent, I think this will accelerate the decline of several clubs in the lesser leagues.

Already teams are dropping down to 16 a side in some competitions and at what point does your paid (and often not really all that good) 20 year old decide it's not worth using up a whole day of his weekend to travel to the country and play footy for a club that means nothing to him, with a bunch of blokes he won't see besides game day...

I know they've based this on the SA country league but country towns tend to be a little bigger there than some of our wheatbelt towns.
