One of the enduring moments of Adam Hunter's career was a nasty clash of heads with Essendon spearhead Matthew Lloyd in the 2002 Elimination Final. Lloyd was knocked out cold, Hunter got up and got on with the game. This summed up Hunter to a tee, a hard defender who can play as a key position defender or as a smaller player in defence.
Hunter was an unfashionable player despite results with supporters of opposition clubs often writing him off as useless, but his performances in big games both as a defender and as a highly effective pinch hitting forward were a key part of the Eagles successful tilt at the 2006 flag. Known for his big marks and crucial goals at critical parts of the game, Hunter became the quintessential danger man in many games, but the high point was his goal from Daniel Chick's famous smother in the club's Grand Final win (well in hindsight anyway).
After that high, Hunter struggled with injury almost constantly, eventually having his career cruelly cut short at the end of 2009 at only 28 when his shoulder was so badly damaged that he was no longer able to play AFL football. |
