Phil Matera is often described as a little shit by supporters of other clubs, I like to think of him as our personal little shit. Matera is one of the smallest players in the competition, but is certainly one of the best goalsneaks going around. He has led the club goalkicking three times - not a bad effort for a dedicated forward pocket. His regular goal kicking sees him a definite starter in any game he is fit to play.
Matera has pace, good skills below his knees, and an usually unerring sense of where the goals are. Unfortunately he also has a somewhat hot temperament (not entirely unlike his more famous brother), and can go missing in action if the right niggle comes along. As in 2003, Matera struggled a little in the latter part of 2004, but while he continues to provide goals for the club, he will continue to gain selection. He is now one of the oldest players on the list, but the nature of his position probably negates the effect of ageing to some extent, and he will hopefully prove to work well with the improving West Coast big forward brigade. |
