The reward for the 2010 wooden spoon was the number three pick in the draft (the #1 pick going to the newly formed Gold Coast Suns) which the Eagles used on highly rated Victorian Andrew Gaff. Making his debut in the opening round of his first season on an AFL list, after being in and out of the team early in the year, Gaff came back late in the season showing that he was AFL ready, racking up big numbers and impressive performances leading into the finals where he acquitted himself well.
Following on from this impressive debut season, Gaff played every game in 2012, continuing to show a high level of class and finishing fifth in the club's fairest and best in only his second season, and runner up in the AFL's Rising Star award. That however focused attention on Gaff, resulting in a lot of additional attention in the 2013 season, resulting in a sharp drop off in performance that only started to improve later in the season.
Improvement though has been consistent since then, and with his teammates also improving around him, Gaff got the best out of himself, landing a club champion award and All-Australian selection in the Eagles Grand Final season in 2015.
Rumours abounded in the 2018 season that Gaff was heading home to Victoria at the end of the season, with the drums only getting louder when an uncharacteristic punch on a young Docker in a Derby resulted in a massive suspension and Gaff missing the Grand Final. So it was somewhat a surprise when he re-signed a lengthy contract to remain at West Coast. |
